I collaborated with 14 other amazing female doctors, and we each wrote a chapter about the potential of AI from the lens of our particular specialty.
My chapter is called Rising Through the Data: An Occupational Health Journey Amid Pandemic and Prejudice.
Fun Fact: I’m the only Canadian in the group as well as the only Public Health and Occupational Medicine specialist! I wrote about my experiences during the pandemic, my backstory, the power of data and how that determines policy which can increase inequities in populations, and how AI can help to bridge these gaps.

“This essay is not only the record of a fully engaged, lively intelligence at work in the field of public health, but also the imprint of Denise Koh the human being, mother, wife, person of colour, and activist in the struggle for both health and justice.”
--Maurice Mierau, author of Detachment: An Adoption Memoir.
"I loved reading about the perspective of data in medicine and public service. I loved that Dr. Koh highlighted that data--the democratization and power of data--has a very important role to play in bringing equity in the field of medicine. When we make informed decisions based on data, we can stay focused on the highest impacted and most vulnerable areas.”
-- Melanie Au, Sr Director Digital Enablement, CIBC and WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winner (Community Impact)
"Dr. Koh’s life journey and struggles demonstrate her humanity and passion for underserved populations. This is juxtaposed with the cold, robotic world of AI which, paradoxically, she argues will provide better information to communicate and care humanely for people...Through sharing her past trials, tribulations and victories, Dr. Koh speaks to the adage of ‘you can’t manage what you don’t know’ and AI can help fill the ‘unknown’ knowledge gap."
--Dr. Sandor Demeter, Associate Professor Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba and freelance journalist
"Dr Denise Koh has touchingly distilled from her multifaceted personal and professional life experiences in multicultural Canada her humanity and passion for human healing and has aptly projected the importance of human sentience and, therefore, guardrails, in the application of AI technology to enhance public and occupational health and safety."
-- Hon. Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan, P.C., O.M., LL.D., Sc.D., M.Sc., M.D., former medical professor, University of Manitoba and member of Canada’s Parliament and government
“We often think of AI as the bringer of a dystopian future, but could it help us curtail future threats to human health? A timely and fascinating look at a new vision for healthcare.”
--Dr. Susan Wingert, Editor, Sociologist, Program Steward, Alan Klass Program for Health Humanities
“These physicians' stories teach us that it is humans who solve problems not AI. However, AI can make it so much easier for humans to tackle complicated issues.”
--Dr. Sandor Demeter, Associate Professor Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba and freelance journalist
